I often hear others talk about how hard it is to change. This used to be a belief of mine too. “I don’t like change!”, “Change takes time!” , “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks!” Sounds familiar?

The secret to change work is very simple: You have to feel it! Yes it is that simple, nothing changes until the feeling changes. Think about it…. Think of an area in your life that you want to make some changes. What is your energy level when you think about this change you want to make? Is your energy level a 1 or 2 meaning you sort of want to change but you are not that excited about it and you are doing it just because someone told you to do so, or because is the ‘right’ thing to do? Or is your energy level a 9 or 10 where you are pushing through the barriers, feeling excited and focusing on your outcome? Are you having fun and are you being creative about it?

To feel it you need to imagine yourself actually achieving your outcome. And once you have a mental image of you achieving this outcome then imagine yourself a month, six months and a year after achieving this outcome. How do you feel? What do you sense? What do you see? What do you hear? Bring all these feelings into your body. Run these mental movies several times a day and embrace the good feelings that come from imagining yourself once you’ve made the change.

Many times we get stuck in the intellectual process, thinking too much on the how: How am I going to achieve this? In NLP we believe that the resources an individual needs to effect change are already with them. You have the resources, all you need to do is change your feelings, be curious, be excited and change will happen.
